Building automation systems has been connected to remote services typically via open internet connections. This poses a significant risk for cyber attacks, which may cause harm to the automation itself. As an example there was a such an incident in 2016 at Lappeenranta where a district heating system of 10 apartment buildings went down due to a DoS attack. This incident was reported on several newspapers.
In Talotohtori development we have put a special focus for minimising the risk for cyber attacks. This is primarily done by using closed access point network (APN) when connecting to buildings and their automation systems or other devices, including IoT sensors. This means that the end point (IP-address) is not visible to the internet. Additionally in server side all traffic is secured with SSL and strong passwords are used. Any access points from outside are secured with VPN.
